Amazing paddleboard lesson!

I had such a fantastic time with the paddleboard lesson! The instructors were so patient and made it really fun. The loch was beautiful. I'm already planning my next trip back to try kayaking. Will definitely tell all my friends about Loch Insh!

Reliable for winter sports

This is our third year coming to Loch Insh for winter sports. We always rent our ski equipment here, and it's consistently good. The skis are well-maintained, and the boots fit well. The staff in the ski hire shop are efficient, which is key when you just want to hit the dry slope. We also usually grab lunch at the Boathouse, and that's been consistently good too. It's why we keep coming back – you know what you're getting.

Fun, but could improve

My partner and I did a windsurfing lesson, which was a lot of fun. The instructor was knowledgeable and really tried to get us up and going. Equipment was fine. The booking system online was a bit clunky, I had some trouble adding two people to the same lesson slot and it timed out once. We also stayed in a camping pod, which was basic but did the job for one night. It was clean enough, but the shared facilities were a bit of a walk. Good value for money though, especially for the activities.

Good family weekend stay

We booked a self-catering chalet for a weekend and also did some activities. The booking process online was straightforward, and we received a confirmation email quickly. Check-in for the chalet was smooth. We hired mountain bikes one afternoon; the equipment was in good condition and the staff at the bike hire shed were helpful with trail suggestions. Later, we had dinner at the Boathouse Restaurant. The food was decent, standard pub fare. The chalet itself was clean and well-equipped for what we needed. Overall, a solid experience for a family trip with plenty to do.

Kayak tour was chill

Did a kayak tour with a few mates. It was pretty relaxed, the guide showed us some cool spots on the loch. Equipment was all good. We had a beer at the beach bar afterwards, nice way to end the day. Everything felt easy.

Comparing Loch Insh with Rothiemurchus for mountain biking, any thoughts? Better trails or bike quality at one vs the other?

S Sarah 2 months ago
Rothiemurchus has some great dedicated trails. Loch Insh's more about the overall activity centre vibe, but their bike hire is decent for exploring locally.

If you're serious about mountain biking, Rothiemurchus might have more challenging trails. For a more casual ride and access to other stuff, Loch Insh is good.

Anyone know how the dry slope skiing compares to, say, Glenshee or Nevis? Obviously not real snow, but is it decent for learning?

J June M. 2 months ago
It's totally different from real snow, way stickier. But for learning the basics and getting comfortable on skis, it's pretty good. Good for kids.

Don't expect the same feel as a mountain resort, it's a dry slope. Good for practice runs and getting your turns down before hitting proper snow. For just starting out, it's fine.

Hey, wondering if the family activity pass applies to everything? Like, can we mix and match activities for the kids and us?

S Shane Z. 2 months ago
Yeah, pretty sure it covers most of the basic stuff. We used it for paddleboarding and then some archery.

It's usually a select group of activities, not everything on the list. You'd need to check the details on the pass you're looking at, but it's pretty flexible within those options.

Thinking of booking a kayak tour for next summer. Do these things sell out fast or can I wait a bit?

D Derek 3 months ago
Definitely book ahead, especially if you're looking at peak times like July or August. They get really busy.

i think you can probably wait a month or so if it's not a school holiday week. I booked ours like 3 weeks out last year and it was fine.

What happens if the weather is totally rubbish and we've booked paddleboarding? Do they cancel or do we just get soaked?

J James Vargas 2 months ago
They'll usually try and reschedule if it's really bad, or offer an alternative activity if available. Definitely check their policy though.

I had a kayak booking once and it was super windy. They called us the day before and let us rebook for another day without any hassle.
